Today’s devotion title:
The Rice on Kai’s Plate
John 6:11
“Then Jesus took the bread, gave thanks, and handed it out to the people who were sitting there. He did the same with the fish, and everyone ate as much as they wanted.”
One afternoon, Kai got home from school with a super hungry stomach. When he lifted the food cover on the table, he found a plate of warm rice, soy-sauce chicken, and veggie soup. Kai shouted, “Whoa, my favorite!” Because he was so hungry, he grabbed a spoon and started eating right away—without praying first.
His mom saw him and gently said, “Kai, you forgot something.” Kai stopped and said quietly, “Oh yeah… the prayer before eating, right, Mom?” His mom smiled. “Yes, sweetheart. Remember the story where Jesus fed five thousand people? Before He shared the food, Jesus thanked God first. That’s because every meal, even a small one, is a blessing from God.” Kai nodded. He looked at his plate again and realized not every kid gets to eat food as good and as much as he does.
Then his mom added, “Every time you eat, it’s like God is saying, ‘I love you. I’m taking care of you.’ That’s why we give thanks.” Kai smiled, closed his eyes, said a short prayer, and started eating again. This time, every bite felt more special—like God’s love was in it.
Rehobot Kids, do you always remember to pray before eating? The food we enjoy every day is a real blessing from God. Not everyone gets enough to eat.
So let’s learn to be thankful. Every time we say thank you before a meal, we’re reminding ourselves that God loves us, looks after us, and provides what we need each day.
