The Lamp in the Storage Room

James 1:22
“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.”

One afternoon, Lani helped her grandmother clean the storage room. Among the old boxes, she found a small yellow emergency lamp. The lamp was a little dusty, but it still looked fine. “Grandma, can this lamp still be used?” Lani asked. Grandma picked it up and pressed a small button on the side.

Suddenly, the lamp lit up brightly, even though it was not plugged into electricity. “That is an emergency lamp,” Grandma explained. “Inside it is a battery that can store electricity. When the lamp is plugged into a power outlet, the battery gets charged. So when the power goes out, the lamp can still shine.” Lani nodded and put the lamp back.

That night, suddenly the electricity in the house went out. The house became dark, and Lani’s little sibling started to feel scared. Lani immediately remembered the emergency lamp in the storage room. She ran to get it and turned it on. Right away, the living room became bright. Now Mom could clearly see to find and light some candles. Soon everyone felt calmer, and the house felt warm again.

Grandma smiled and said, “This lamp already had light inside it. But if it just stays in the storage room, no one can benefit from it.” Lani understood. Light is useful only when it is turned on.

God’s Word is like that too. We can hear it, remember it, and even study it. But if we do not put it into practice, the light is like a lamp stored away. When we live out God’s Word in our lives, that light can truly help others.
