A Heart That Is Willing to Listen

James 1:19
“My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.”

One day at school, Riko was happily drawing. Suddenly, Bima accidentally bumped into his desk, and Riko’s colored pencils fell to the floor. Riko immediately got upset and shouted, “Why are you so careless?!”

Bima was startled and almost cried. He said softly, “I’m sorry, Riko. I didn’t mean to.”
Hearing that, Riko became quiet. He remembered the Bible verse he had learned in Sunday School. He realized he had been too quick to get angry and had not stopped to listen. Riko took a deep breath and said, “I’m sorry too, Bima. I got angry right away.” Bima smiled, and they went back to playing together.

Rehobot Kids, often we are quick to speak and quick to get angry, but slow to listen. Yet God teaches us the opposite: be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry. When we pause and listen calmly, many problems can be solved peacefully.

Let’s learn each day to control our hearts. Before getting angry, take a deep breath and listen first. Before speaking, think first. A heart that is willing to listen is a gentle heart that pleases God.
