Not Because of the Reward

Deuteronomy 6:5
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.”

Rafi sat in front of his homework book. He sighed deeply as he twirled his pencil. “Ah, this isn’t a test. There’s no reward either,” he muttered. He hadn’t done any of it yet.

His older brother came and sat next to him. “Fi, when you play soccer, do you play wholeheartedly or half-heartedly?”
“Wholeheartedly, of course!” Rafi replied quickly.
“Why? You don’t always get a trophy.”
Rafi was silent.

His brother smiled and said, “If we are only enthusiastic when there is a prize, it means we are chasing the prize. But if we keep doing our best even when no one is watching, that means we are doing it for God. The way we do small things shows who we love.”

Rafi looked at his book again. This time he started working seriously. Not because of the test. Not because of the prize. But because he wanted to love God with all his heart through his responsibilities.

Rehobot Kids, loving God is not only through prayer and song, but also through the little things we do every day. Studying diligently, helping our parents, being honest, and doing what is right even when no one is watching—that is a sign that we love God with all our heart, soul, and strength.
