When Your Soul Feels Heavy

“Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.”
— Psalm 42:6

Have you ever felt that your body is fine, but your soul feels heavy? There are no major problems, but your heart is restless, your motivation is low, and joy feels far away. Psalm 42 describes this condition very honestly—an inner exhaustion that is often difficult to explain in words.

The psalmist does not hide his struggles. He even speaks to his own soul, acknowledging that there is pressure and anxiety within him. This reminds us that inner exhaustion is not a sign of failed faith, but a sign that we are human beings carrying the burdens of life.

Interestingly, the psalmist does not stop at complaining. He directs his soul back to hope in God. That hope does not arise because circumstances have changed immediately, but because he knows on whom he relies. In the midst of a heavy soul, he chooses to remember who God is to him—a faithful Helper and a God who does not abandon him.

We learn that faith is not about always feeling strong. Faith also means choosing to hope, even when our feelings have not yet recovered. When our “spiritual batteries” feel low, we don’t need to distance ourselves from God—that is precisely the best time to come to Him. If your soul feels heavy today, God is not angry and He is not far away. He invites you to be honest, then slowly lifts your head with new hope.

What To Do?
1. Acknowledge your feelings honestly before God.
2. Remind yourself of God’s faithfulness in the past.
3. Choose to hope in God, even if your feelings haven’t changed.
