Today’s Devotional Title:
When Emotions Rise, Knees Go Down
Psalm 141:3
“Set a guard over my mouth, LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips.”
When emotions rise, responses often come without a filter. Words slip out faster than thoughts. A chat gets sent before being reconsidered. The tone of voice sharpens before the heart has time to settle. And after everything is said, what often remains is regret.
David understood how dangerous a tongue controlled by emotion can be. That is why he prayed—not only for a calm heart, but for God to guard his mouth. He realized that emotions are human, but uncontrolled expressions can wound more deeply than we imagine.
This psalm teaches a simple yet powerful principle: give God space between your feelings and your reaction. Prayer is the sacred pause between what we feel and what we do. When we kneel first, we give the Holy Spirit room to filter our words and realign our hearts.
When emotions rise, knees go down means choosing prayer before drama. Choosing silence before debate. Choosing surrender to God before surrendering to anger. That is where self-control is formed, and where our faith is seen—not in how loudly we speak, but in how wisely we restrain ourselves.
What To Do?
1. When your emotions begin to rise, pause for a moment and say a short prayer.
2. Ask God to guard your words and attitude before you respond.
3. Train yourself to make prayer your first response, not your last option.
