The House on Bukit Tetes
“The wise store up choice food and olive oil, but fools gulp theirs down.” – Proverbs 21:20
In a small village called Bukit Tetes, there was a little house where a wise grandmother named Grandma Santi lived with her grandson, Gio. Their home was simple, but it was always filled with laughter and prayer.
One morning, Gio complained, “Grandma, why do we always have to be so thrifty? I only took a fifteen-minute shower. Why is that wasteful?” Grandma Santi smiled and said, “Gio, come with me for a walk behind the hill.” They walked until they reached a small spring flowing gently. “Look at this, Gio. This water is like life—it comes drop by drop. If we waste it, one day it could run out. God blesses us with water, electricity, food, and many other things—not for us to waste.”
Gio began to understand, but Grandma Santi continued. She opened a small cloth pouch and showed him a grain of rice, an electricity bill, and an empty water bottle. “These three little things can teach us a big lesson,” she said.
“Rice: never take more than you can eat. Electricity: turn off the lights when you’re not using them. Water: use just enough. All of these are blessings from God, not rights to use carelessly.” Then Grandma Santi read Proverbs 21:20: “The wise store up choice food and olive oil, but fools gulp theirs down.” “Wise people value God’s gifts. But those who don’t care, waste them,” she explained.
From that day on, Gio changed. He began turning off the lights by himself, never left food on his plate, and reminded his friends, “Don’t waste water—it’s a blessing from God.” Gio smiled and said in his heart, “I want to be a wise child.”
