The Courage to Say No
Matthew 5:37
Let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No’ be ‘No.’ Anything more than that comes from the evil one.
Many of us find it hard to say “no.” We’re afraid of disappointing others, of being seen as uncaring, or of losing relationships. In the end, we say “yes” even though our hearts are actually weary, unprepared, or in disagreement. Without realizing it, our personal boundaries gradually erode.
Jesus teaches simple honesty and firmness: yes means yes, no means no. This isn’t about being rude or selfish, but about living with integrity. When our words are clear, relationships actually become healthier because they’re built on honesty, not coercion.
Saying “no” isn’t a sign of lacking love. In fact, it’s often an expression of love—both toward ourselves and toward others. With clear boundaries, we do not harbor hidden bitterness, we do not live under unnecessary pressure, and we do not blame others for choices we actually made ourselves.
In the context of relationships and the digital world, the courage to say “no” also means knowing when to stop, when to go offline, and when to keep our distance. Boundaries help us remain whole, honest, and grow.
God does not call us to please everyone, but to live righteously before Him. Clarity in saying “yes” and “no” is part of the spiritual maturity God desires.
What To Do?
1. Train yourself to be honest with your heart and your abilities before saying “yes.”
2. Remember that saying “no” is not a sin, if done with the right attitude.
3. Ask God for wisdom so that your words always reflect truth and love.
