Sympathy That Gives Life

“Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.”
— Galatians 6:2

When we learn to walk in “someone else’s shoes,” we begin to see life from a different perspective. Unfortunately, as young people, we often rush to judge without truly understanding the burdens others are carrying. In fact, sympathy is the way God uses to grow love and spiritual maturity in us.

The Bible gives us a beautiful example through the character of Tabitha, also known as Dorcas. She was known not for her words, but for her actions. Tabitha was full of sympathy for the poor in Joppa. She did not busy herself with judging or criticizing, but chose to sew clothes and help those in need. When Tabitha died, many people wept because they had lost someone whose life had such an impact. Through their prayers and faith, God even used Peter to raise Tabitha back to life.

Tabitha’s story teaches us that compassion is not just a feeling of pity, but a concrete action. She did not see the poor from their weaknesses, but walked with them, carried their burdens, and brought Christ’s love to life. It is this kind of compassion that gives life—both to those who receive it and those who give it.

Learning from Tabitha’s life, we are invited to develop sympathy that gives life. By refraining from judgment and choosing to care, we can become channels of Christ’s love in a world that is often quicker to judge than to understand.

What to Do?
1. Train yourself to see the needs of others before judging their weaknesses.
2. Express sympathy in concrete actions, no matter how small, like Tabitha sewing clothes.
3. Remember: sincere sympathy can revive the faith and hope of others.
