Imagine traveling somewhere completely unfamiliar. What do we need most? A complete map. Nowadays, we rely on GPS to show us the route, road conditions, and even alternatives in real time. Knowing the entire route calms us.
However, in our journey of life with God, we often are not given a complete map. Matthew 2:19–23 shows God’s guidance is step by step, not all at once: Trust God’s leading even when details aren’t clear.
After Herod died, an angel told Joseph in a dream, “Get up, take the child and his mother, and go to Israel.” Joseph obeyed without bargaining or demanding more details. He followed God’s direction.
Interestingly, their journey did not end there. When Joseph heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of Herod, he was afraid to go there. Then God again spoke to him in a dream, and Joseph was directed to Galilee, to a small town called Nazareth. If we look at the route, Joseph’s life journey was not a straight line: Bethlehem → Egypt → Israel → Nazareth. From a human perspective, this looks unusual, like a zig-zag route that is inefficient and confusing. Yet it is precisely through that seemingly winding path that God’s plan was perfectly fulfilled.
This teaches us that living under God’s leadership means being faithful to each step. We may wish to know the entire route, but God often gives just enough light for our next move.
God is interested not only in our destination but also in shaping our relationship with Him. If we knew everything up front, we might rely on ourselves. When we know only the next step, we learn to depend on Him daily.
Additionally, this story teaches that what seems like a detour can be part of God’s perfect plan. Egypt was never the final goal, and Nazareth was not a prestigious choice, yet both fulfilled God’s word. In our lives, phases may feel “out of plan.” We step out in faith, only to encounter changes, delays, or surprises. We ask, “Lord, why has the path changed?”
But today’s word reminds us: God never loses control. Even on winding roads, He directs everything toward His plan. God does not require perfect understanding, just steady obedience.
Today, we might not fully understand what is happening or have all the answers. We may be at a confusing crossroads, unsure of the way forward. But we’re not alone. Joseph’s story shows the key is not knowing every step, but trusting and consistently obeying God’s guidance.
