Today’s Devotion Is Titled:
Silence That Saves

“Do not be quick with your mouth, do not be hasty in your heart to utter anything before God. God is in heaven and you are on earth, so let your words be few.”
— Ecclesiastes 5:2

In this fast-paced era, young people often feel the need to react immediately. A small opinion—reply. A sharp comment—respond. A difference—debate. Yet God’s Word reminds us: do not be quick to speak. Not everything needs an instant response. Sometimes, silence is the strongest and most saving choice.

Nehemiah gives us an example that is often overlooked. When he heard the news that the walls of Jerusalem were broken down, he did not immediately blame anyone or react emotionally. Instead, he chose to be silent—he sat down, wept, and prayed before God (Nehemiah 1:4). Nehemiah’s silence was not a sign of weakness, but a sign of awareness: before speaking to people, he first came to God.

Silence creates space for prayer, reflection, and clarity of heart. Young people are often tempted to “win” arguments, yet not every conflict needs to be won with words. Self-control does not mean defeat—it is a mark of maturity. In stillness, we learn to discern what needs to be spoken and what is better entrusted to God.

Learning from Nehemiah, we are invited to see silence as spiritual strength. By choosing not to speak hastily, we avoid unnecessary wounds and open the way for solutions filled with wisdom. Sometimes, what saves us most is not many words, but a calm heart and ears willing to listen to God.

What to Do?
1. Train yourself to pray first before responding to stressful situations.
2. Use moments of silence to seek understanding, not merely to suppress emotions.
3. Learn from Nehemiah: let your words be born from prayer, not from impulse.
