Shifting God’s Position

When the Lord Jesus taught the Lord’s Prayer and placed the phrase “Hallowed be Your name” at the beginning, He was not only calling believers to live holy like the holy God. This phrase also affirms that no person or thing may occupy the position that belongs only to God. Unfortunately, humans are often trapped by the devil’s deception, which seeks to duplicate God’s role in many forms. The power of darkness can present something that appears good, attractive, even spiritual, but ultimately draws people away from God.

Therefore, the question behind the phrase “Hallowed be Your name” is very fundamental: Is God truly first in our lives? Or has something quietly taken His place? When God no longer occupies the highest position in someone’s life, that space will quickly be filled by something else that ultimately directs the heart away from Him.

This corresponds with the first commandment in the Decalogue: “You shall have no other gods before me” (Exodus 20:3). Interestingly, “Hallowed be Your name” is the first petition in the Lord’s Prayer. Both address the highest priority in human life. God not only forbids the worship of other deities but also forbids anything that takes His place in the human heart. This is the principle that Jesus further developed in His teaching.

Idols today are not always statues or objects openly worshiped. Often idols appear in seemingly honorable forms: a brilliant career, increasing wealth, social status, family, achievements, even a successful ministry. These things are not inherently wrong. However, when something becomes the center of life and is considered more valuable than God, it becomes an idol. That is why Jesus warned in Matthew 6:24, “No one can serve two masters.” The word “serve” points to total loyalty and surrender. A person cannot place God and mammon on the same level. In the end, he will love one and neglect the other. That is why mammon is one of the devil’s most effective tools to displace God from the human heart.

But God never forces people to choose Him. He gives free will and invites people to make the right decision. The call to hallow His name is not indoctrination but a loving invitation, so fleeting things do not deceive people. For whatever is in this world will pass away.

The Apostle Paul reminds us in 1 Corinthians 15:50 that the perishable will not share in the imperishable. Therefore, as beings given reason and the ability to understand truth, we are called to choose what is of eternal value—God and His Kingdom. Everything we possess in this world is temporary, but God remains forever.

Therefore, when we pray, “Hallowed be Your name,” we declare that only God deserves the highest position in our lives. We commit not to allow anything—whether wealth, achievements, comfort, or personal ambition—to displace Him from the throne of our hearts. For only when God is first does human life find direction, meaning, and eternal purpose.
