Love That Overcomes Ego

John 13:34-35
“A new commandment I give you: Love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

Loving sounds beautiful—until our ego starts to get in the way. In relationships—whether friendships, ministry, family, or community—conflicts often arise not because of a lack of knowledge, but because of an ego that wants to be understood, justified, and prioritized.

Jesus gave a command that is not easy: to love as He has loved. Jesus’ love is not a demanding love, but a giving love. He willingly humbled Himself, overcame His ego, and even sacrificed Himself for others. It is this kind of love that is the mark of a disciple of Christ.

True love chooses to listen first, to refrain from retaliation, and to willingly yield in order to preserve relationships. That is where the ego is tested, and love is formed. Jesus said that the world will recognize us as His disciples not by how eloquently we speak about faith, but by how we love. When the ego is overcome and love is prioritized, the presence of Christ becomes evident through our lives.

What To Do?
• Examine your heart: is ego currently dominating your relationships?
• Choose one concrete act of love today, even if it means yielding.
• Pray that God will help you to love not in your own strength, but with the love of Christ.
