Philippians 3:20
“For our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior.”
One common mistake the believers make is living as if this world were a permanent home. Unnoticed, we often become so busy pursuing success, comfort, achievements, and human recognition that we forget all of these are temporary. Scripture clearly teaches that our citizenship does not come from this world but from the Kingdom of Heaven. Though we still live on earth, our true purpose is to live in eternity with Christ.
A person’s orientation or life direction determines how they use their time, energy, and whole life. Those who are focused only on the world measure success by wealth, position, or accomplishments. In contrast, those oriented toward eternity will ask, “Is my life pleasing to the Lord? Am I preparing to meet Christ?”
The apostle Peter reminds us to set our hope fully on the grace that will be brought to us at the revelation of Jesus Christ (1 Peter 1:13). This means the believer’s greatest hope is not a more comfortable life on earth but welcoming the full revelation of Christ’s glory. Such hope gives strength to remain faithful, even when facing trials and suffering for the sake of faith.
As citizens of the Kingdom of Heaven, we are called to live differently from the world. That difference is not primarily seen in how many physical blessings we receive, but in a character increasingly like Christ’s. We learn to love when the world hates, remain honest when falsehood is accepted, stay humble when the world chases popularity, and remain faithful when obedience requires sacrifice. This life shows that our hearts are truly set on the Kingdom of God. Each day is an opportunity to prepare. God entrusts time, talents, work, family, and ministry so they may all be used to glorify Him. Nothing done for the Lord is wasted. Conversely, everything done only for self-interest will perish with this transient world.
Therefore, let us evaluate the direction of our lives. Is our heart more attached to worldly things or to God’s eternal promises? Do not become skilled at building a life on earth while neglecting preparation for eternal life. In the end, what will remain is not what we accumulated on earth but who we are before God. Believers are called to live with an eternal orientation, not a worldly one. When our hearts are fixed on the Kingdom of God, every decision, sacrifice, and act of faithfulness we make today will have eternal value before the Lord.
