Living by Values

Proverbs 1:8-9
“My son, listen to your father’s instruction, and do not forsake your mother’s teaching, for they are a garland to your head and a necklace to your neck.”

We often say, “I respect my parents,” but when it comes to life values like honesty, discipline, or integrity, we sometimes choose the easy way out. Yet, respecting our parents and authority figures also means valuing the principles they’ve instilled in us. Those values serve as a foundation so we don’t easily waver in the face of life’s pressures.

As young people, we’re easily influenced by trends or others’ opinions. But if we have a strong foundation of values from home—like respecting our parents, being honest, and being disciplined—we won’t be easily swept away by the current. In fact, those values allow us to stand firm and become role models for others. Respecting our parents means we also respect the life principles they teach us.

So, don’t just say “I respect.” Show it through your way of life. If your parents teach you about honesty, don’t compromise with small lies. If they emphasize discipline, try to live by it consistently. From there, we learn that respect isn’t just a word, but a way of life that makes us role models as well.

What to Do?
• Apply the values your parents taught you in your daily decisions, no matter how small.
• Show respect through consistency: not just words, but through real actions.
