Learning from Differences

“Then a sharp disagreement arose, and they parted company; Barnabas took Mark with him, and Paul took Silas.”
— Acts 15:39

Conflict is often seen as something to be avoided. However, in real life—including in spiritual communities—conflict is a natural part of human relationships. Young people need to learn that conflict is not always bad. It is through conflict that our character is tested and our spiritual maturity is formed.

Barnabas sets an interesting example. He was known as the “son of encouragement,” a person full of empathy and support. However, in Acts 15, he had a sharp disagreement with Paul about John Mark. Paul thought Mark was not yet fit for ministry because he had previously withdrawn, while Barnabas chose to give him a second chance. This difference in opinion could not be reconciled, so they eventually parted ways.

At first glance, this separation seems like a failure. However, God was still working behind the scenes. Paul continued his ministry with Silas, while Barnabas guided Mark until he was restored. Later on, Mark was even used by God to write the Gospel. Conflict did not destroy the ministry—it actually expanded its impact.

From this story, we learn that differences do not always have to be resolved. Sometimes, the humility to accept differences and continue to love is a much more mature attitude. Conflict can be a space where God works, shaping our hearts and revealing His plans that are greater than our personal egos.

What to Do?
1. Don’t be afraid to face conflict; see it as an opportunity to grow.
2. Learn to accept differences without imposing your personal will.
3. Remember Barnabas: love and sympathy can give birth to new opportunities even through conflict.
