Today’s Devotional Title:
Knowing Yourself Through Others
“The purposes of a person’s heart are deep waters, but one who has insight draws them out.”
— Proverbs 20:5
Many people try to define themselves through achievements, the number of likes on social media, or recognition from those around them. But God’s Word reminds us that the human heart is not easy to understand—even by ourselves. Often, it is through the presence of other people in our lives—friends or close companions—that we begin to truly discover who we are.
In friendship, we are often given an honest mirror. Some friends dare to correct us when our attitudes hurt others, while others encourage us when we start doubting our own abilities. Through their responses, we learn to recognize our strengths, weaknesses, and attitudes that still need to change. This process is not always comfortable, but it is essential for character growth and spiritual maturity.
We see this clearly in everyday life, such as when serving in a ministry team or working on group projects. Sometimes we feel we’ve done our best, yet teammates may point out that our communication feels too harsh or not open enough. Through moments like these, we learn to manage our emotions, improve how we speak, and build healthier relationships. God often uses other people as His tools to “draw out” what’s inside our hearts so that our lives can be shaped according to His will.
What to Do?
1. Be open to constructive feedback that builds your character and faith from the people God has placed around you.
2. Use relationships as a mirror to recognize your strengths and the areas of life that still need growth.
3. Develop humility so that the process of growing through others becomes a blessing, not a wound.
