Gratitude Without Demands
“I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.”
Philippians 4:11
Have you ever felt like life is unfair and wanted to demand more? Many young people often think, “I deserve this, I should have that.” But someone who is aware of God knows that life isn’t about demanding—it’s about receiving with gratitude. Paul himself said that he learned to be content in every situation.
Jeane Marie Tulung, Director General of Christian Community Guidance at Indonesia’s Ministry of Religious Affairs, can be a real-life example (Bimas Kristen, Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia — kumparan.com). Even in the midst of a high position and public attention, she continues to emphasize the importance of ecotheology and a curriculum rooted in love, rather than simply demanding status or human praise. This attitude shows that even Christian public officials can live with the awareness that everything they have is grace, not a right to be demanded.
As young people, we’re often tempted to compare ourselves with others. But a life that’s aware of God means learning to be satisfied with what we have, while remaining faithful to His calling. It doesn’t mean we stop dreaming, but we understand that everything we have is a gift, not something we gain by demanding it.
When we stop demanding, we actually find peace. Life becomes lighter, relationships become healthier, and our hearts become more grateful. That’s a real way to show that we are aware of God—not through big words, but through a humble and thankful attitude.
What to Do?
1. Train yourself to stop comparing your life with others.
2. Starting today, give thanks for the small things you have.
3. Learn to be content and trust that God knows what is best for you.
