Today’s Devotional:
Giving Without Emptying Yourself

“Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water (John 7:38)”

There is a fundamental difference between a bucket and a spring. A bucket will empty when poured out, but a spring continues to flow without ever running dry because it has a deep source. In relationships, many people function like buckets; they give until they are empty, then feel tired, frustrated, and drained. However, God calls us to be like a spring. When a relationship feels exhausting, it often means we are trying to give from our own limited “bucket.” We rely on our own strength, patience, and love, which eventually run out. However, when we connect to the source of life, we can give endlessly without feeling empty.
The secret of a spring is its deep roots. The deeper the roots of our faith are planted in God’s love, the more abundantly we can give to others. We no longer depend on others’ responses or reciprocation to feel satisfied, because our satisfaction comes from our relationship with God.
A healthy relationship is like two springs meeting, both giving without expecting anything in return, both refreshing without feeling drained. They do not empty each other, but enrich each other. Like two rivers that meet and become a larger and stronger stream. For that reason, today we try to reexamine the source of strength in our relationship. Are we trying to give from a “bucket” that is limited or from a “spring” that never runs dry? God desires to be the source that continuously flows into our lives and relationships.

What To Do:
1. It is time for us to begin re-examining ourselves and the source of our relationship with God whether we rely solely on ourselves to give or whether it is from our awareness of God’s overwhelming love in our lives.
2. Learn to begin giving, not out of pity for others, but because we are aware that Jesus Christ has already given to us first.
