Friendship That Shapes Character
“Better is open rebuke than hidden love.”
Proverbs 27:5
In friendship, we often feel comfortable when there is a friend who is always there for us—supporting and comforting us. However, healthy friendship does not stop at support alone. A true friend is also brave enough to remind us and correct us when we are heading in the wrong direction.
Proverbs 27:5 emphasizes that correction from a friend, even when it feels uncomfortable and hurts our ego, is actually born out of sincere love. Correction is not meant to tear us down, but to help us become better people and grow in the Lord.
A friend who truly loves will not allow us to remain in our mistakes. They are willing to speak the truth with a loving and humble attitude. On the other hand, praise without honesty can trap us in a misleading comfort.
What To Do:
1. Reflect on whether your current friendships help you grow in the Lord.
2. Be open to advice and correction that are given in love.
3. Learn to be a friend who is honest and loving—not only supportive, but also edifying.
