Friends Who Help You Grow
1 Samuel 18:1
“After David had finished talking with Saul, Jonathan became one in spirit with David, and he loved him as himself.”
Everyone needs friends, but not every friend helps us grow. Some make us more excited, while others pull us further away from our life’s purpose. That’s why it’s so important to analyze: is our circle helping us level up, or keeping us stuck?
A clear example can be seen in the story of David and Jonathan. They weren’t just friends, but truly became each other’s support system. Jonathan was willing to support David even though it meant David would become king instead of his own father. That shows us that true friendship isn’t afraid of losing position, but instead pushes a friend to reach God’s calling.
In today’s era, a relationship like David and Jonathan is similar to having friends who always back us up not only in good times but also in hard times. Healthy friends don’t make us insecure; they help us feel more confident and draw us closer to God. This kind of circle is what we should look for and nurture.
But, if we have friends who pull us away from God, tear us down, or keep us stuck in bad habits, that’s a warning sign. God wants us to be wise in choosing our circle. It doesn’t mean build emotional walls, but we need to recognize who can truly be the kind of friend that helps us grow.
What to Do?
1. Evaluate your circle: are they drawing you closer to God or pulling you away?
2. Learn to be a healthy friend: support your friends to grow, not tear them down.
3. Be brave to choose a circle that helps you level up, even if it means reducing time with toxic friends.
