Forgiving a Past That Still Lingers
Isaiah 43:18
“He says: ‘Do not dwell on the past, and do not dwell on the things of ancient times!’”
There is a past that is not easy to let go of. Not because we want to keep remembering it, but because the wounds, failures, or losses still leave their mark. Sometimes the situation has passed, but the impact is still felt—in our thoughts, emotions, and even the way we view life.
God’s Word today isn’t telling us to deny the past, much less pretend everything is fine. God knows that memories can leave their mark. Yet He invites us not to keep living bound by what has already happened. “Do not dwell on the past” is a call to release the past from its hold on our hearts.
Forgiving the past means stopping old experiences from defining who we are today. This is a spiritual decision—not because the wounds have healed, but because we believe God is doing something new. Forgiveness makes room for God to work, even when healing isn’t yet fully visible.
God does not wait for our lives to be fully restored to grant peace. He longs to set our hearts free first. When we choose to forgive the past, we are saying: “I no longer live controlled by what has happened, but by what God is doing.”
What To Do?
• Acknowledge before God the parts of the past that still linger in your heart.
• Pray and declare your decision to forgive that situation, even if your feelings haven’t fully changed yet.
• Entrust the healing process to God, one day at a time.
