FOMO vs God’s Plan
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
(Proverbs 3:5–6)
FOMO — Fear of Missing Out. The fear of being left out. The fear of not keeping up with trends. The fear of not having as many experiences as others. This is one of the biggest anxieties of our generation. When you see your friend traveling abroad, another advancing rapidly in their career, and another getting invited to major events — you start asking, “When will it be my turn?”
In the digital age, we’re constantly exposed to the highlights of other people’s lives. But the truth is, we rarely know the full story — the process or struggles behind their success. We only see the tip of the iceberg, and then feel like our own life doesn’t measure up because we haven’t gone “as far.”
But God’s Word reminds us: your life’s path is not someone else’s. God didn’t create us as copy-paste versions of each other. He has a personal, unique, and perfectly timed plan for every one of us. When you live in FOMO, you tend to move out of pressure, not direction. You get tempted to follow other people’s paths without first asking: is this really God’s calling for me?
Trusting God means learning to wait patiently, walking confidently even if you’re not yet “going viral,” and staying faithful even when things don’t look spectacular. Living in God’s plan will always bring deeper peace than chasing after superficial achievements.
What to Do?
1. Ask yourself: which decisions have I made out of fear of missing out, instead of true conviction?
2. Take time today to pause and reflect: “Am I following God, or just chasing what others are doing?” Pray and ask God to realign your direction.
