Empathy Over Judgement

“Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.”
— Romans 12:15

We often judge people based only on what we see on the surface: the way they speak, their attitude, appearance, or responses that may seem “odd” at first glance. Without realizing it, we are quick to label others. But remember—don’t judge a book by its cover. What we see on the surface is almost never the full story of someone’s life.

Quiet people are not necessarily arrogant. Those who appear indifferent may be carrying deep emotional wounds. Someone who gets angry easily might be emotionally exhausted. When we are too quick to judge, we actually blind ourselves to the real struggles they may be facing.

Today’s Scripture invites us to replace judgment with empathy. Romans 12:15 reminds us that true love does not stand at a distance and evaluate, but dares to draw near and feel alongside others. Rejoicing with those who rejoice and weeping with those who weep—that is genuine empathy.

Empathy helps us stop seeing people only by their “cover” and begin to care about what is in their hearts. This is the attitude that reflects the heart of Christ Jesus: He did not come to judge, but to be present, to understand, and to restore from within.

What To Do?

1. When you feel tempted to judge someone, remind yourself: don’t judge by the cover.
2. Train yourself to listen more than you speak, especially to those who seem hurt or overlooked.
3. Show empathy today through one simple act: be present, listen, or offer support without judgment.
