Controlling Desires

1 Peter 2:11
“Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul.”

Hi, Rehobot Youth! Have you ever wanted something so badly that it felt hard to say “no”? Perhaps it was the desire to own something trendy, to gain attention, to retaliate against someone who hurt you, or to do something fun even though you knew it wasn’t right. Having desires is part of human life, but not every desire should be acted upon.

Peter reminds us that there are desires that can lead us away from the life God intends for us. These desires aren’t just about things that appear obviously bad; they can also arise from within the heart and influence how we act. If we keep giving in to them, wrong desires can take control and cause us to ignore God’s truth. That is why Peter advises believers to abstain from the desires that wage war against the soul.

Rehobot Youth, controlling our desires doesn’t mean we aren’t allowed to have any desires at all. What we need to learn is not to let our desires dictate our actions. When the urge to retaliate arises, we can choose to forgive. When we want attention in the wrong way, we can choose to keep doing what is right. When we desire something that might lead us away from God, we need the courage to say “no.” Through this process, we learn that not everything we want is good for us.

So, Rehobot Youth, do not let desires rule your life. Learn to recognize the desires that could distance you from God and have the courage to step away from them. Bring every desire to God in prayer and measure it against His Word before you act. Spiritual maturity does not mean getting everything we want; rather, it is the ability to exercise self-control and choose what aligns with God’s will.

What To Do?
1. Check every desire with God’s word before acting.
2. Learn to say “no” to desires that distance you from God.
3. Take your struggles to prayer and ask for self-control.
