Commitment to Following God

Matthew 16:24
“Then Jesus said to His disciples, ‘If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Me.’”

Following the LORD is an incredible calling, but it is not without sacrifice. Many people want to experience the blessings of the LORD, but not everyone dares to walk the path of discipleship that He requires. Jesus said that whoever wants to follow Him must deny himself and take up his cross. This means that following the LORD is not merely a spiritual activity but a life commitment to obey even when obedience is not comfortable. Commitment to following the LORD means choosing to live according to His will, not our own. In today’s era, there are so many options that promise comfort and popularity. Yet the path of the LORD often leads us to simplicity, faithfulness, and even suffering.

Following the LORD is not only about our prayers being answered; it is also about waiting without understanding. Commitment is tested not in good times, but when the realities of life challenge our faith. Jesus never hid the cost of following Him. He did not promise a life without problems, but He promised His presence in the midst of our problems. He did not say that the road would be easy, but He promised that His love would be sufficient for us.

A person who is committed to following God does not allow feelings to determine decisions, but allows the Word to be the compass of life. Steadfast commitment to following the LORD is seen in daily choices: remaining faithful in prayer even when the heart feels dry, continuing to believe even when the answer has not yet come, continuing to serve even when unappreciated, and continuing to love even when hurt. Commitment is not about how strong we are, but about the determination to keep walking with the LORD.

Following the LORD means being willing to be shaped. Sometimes the process of shaping is painful, but it always brings good. Like a grain of wheat that must die to bear fruit, so it is with our lives. Jesus said, “For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it” (Matthew 16:25). Losing comfort for the sake of Christ is not a loss, but a path toward a more meaningful life.

If today we feel weary in following the LORD, remember that He is not looking for perfect followers, but faithful ones. He does not compare our journey with others, but He calls us to keep moving forward. Even if we once stepped back, God still allows us to return. God calls us not only to follow Him, but to follow Him until the end. In a world that often changes direction, God is seeking children who firmly hold this decision: “Even though it is not easy, I still want to follow the Lord.” This is the kind of commitment that will lead us to become more like Christ and produce eternal fruit. Amen.
