Today’s Devotional is titled:

“A Small Candle in the Darkness”

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven” – Matthew 5:14-16

Have we ever realized that in this world, people who strive to live righteously are like small candles? When exposed to the wind, they will die and sway, and not only that, small candles are usually placed in dark places to illuminate a space. Striving to live righteously is also like that. As we witness this increasingly dark world, people are more inclined to pursue things that are dazzling, more individualistic, and so on, rather than focusing on good character. Ironically, people prefer to be “trending” rather than being genuine. However, Jesus once said, “We are the light,” not “We will become the light.” These are two different things. “We are the light” means that the potential to be light already exists within us right now. It doesn’t matter if we are young or small, because the potential to be light is already within us; it’s just a matter of whether we choose to light it or not.

Like a small candle, it may not be as bright as a church lamp, but when a single candle is lit in a dark room, all eyes will inevitably be drawn to it. Why? Because light, no matter how small, has an impact. God does not ask us to be a very bright lamp that can illuminate a large room, but God asks us how we can be light through our character.

What To Do:

1. Starting today, we need to realize that we are small candles placed in this dark world through our character, which reflects Christ.

2. A sincere and consistent heart is important to show Christ’s character in our lives.
