A Mouth Willing to Be Corrected
Ephesians 4:29
“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”
Hi, Rehobot Youth! Have you ever been corrected because your words were considered rude, foul, or hurtful to others? Our initial response might be to defend ourselves by saying, “I was just joking,” “They’re too sensitive,” or “My friends talk like that too.” However, when our words hurt others or go against God’s will, we need the humility to accept correction. Just because something is commonly said in social circles doesn’t mean it is right for us to say.
God’s Word teaches us not to let unwholesome talk come out of our mouths, but rather words that build others up. Therefore, we need to be diligent in reading the Bible, listening to sermons, and praying. Through these habits, God shapes our hearts and our way of thinking, making us increasingly sensitive to words that do not please Him. The more we know God’s truth, the better we should be at distinguishing between words that edify and words that can hurt others.
Rehobot Youth, God can also use the people around us to correct our speech. Parents, siblings, leaders, teachers, or friends might point it out when our way of speaking becomes harsh or hurtful. Our first reaction is often to defend ourselves or feel judged. Try to hold back for a moment, listen with humility, and then examine your words against God’s Word. The correction may not be pleasant to hear, but it can be God’s way of helping us notice words we have long considered normal.
So, Rehobot Youth, cultivate a heart that is willing to be corrected and shaped by God. Don’t defend wrong words just because they have become a habit or are considered normal by the environment. Ask God to help us guard every word so that it can bring goodness to others. Humility is seen when we are not only willing to hear correction, but are also willing to change so that our words increasingly reflect the character of Christ.
What To Do?
1. Think carefully before saying something to others.
2. Learn to manage your emotions so that your words remain measured.
3. Choose words that are kind and constructive, rather than hurtful.
