Being Humble
James 1:19
“My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,”
Hi, Rehobot Youth! Have you ever felt resentful when someone corrects or evaluates your way of thinking? Sometimes we feel our opinions are right, so we view correction as annoying or feel like we are being controlled. Yet, we are not always able to see ourselves accurately. Therefore, we need humility to realize that our thoughts, attitudes, and decisions still need to be shaped by God.
James reminds us to be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to become angry. This attitude requires humility. God can shape our mindset through His Word. When we diligently read the Bible, listen to the truth of the Word, and pray, God helps us see whether our way of thinking aligns with His will. God’s Word does not merely increase our knowledge; it also serves as a mirror, revealing areas of our lives that still need improvement.
Rehobot Youth, God can also use the people around us to help us grow. Correction from parents, leaders, friends, or others does not always mean they are attacking us. It could be that God is using them to show us something we haven’t yet realized. Therefore, do not immediately become defensive or angry when corrected. Listen first, then test every piece of advice against God’s Word. Humility does not mean accepting every opinion without thinking; rather, it means being willing to learn and change when we realize we are indeed wrong.
So, Rehobot Youth, do not be afraid when God evaluates your life. A humble heart is not one that constantly feels in the wrong, but one that is always ready to be taught. The more we allow God’s Word to shape our minds, the more our character grows in accordance with His will. A humble person is not preoccupied with proving themselves right, but rather desires to ensure their life aligns increasingly with God’s truth.
What To Do?
1. Listen humbly to correction before reacting.
2. Test every rebuke and piece of advice against the truth of God’s Word.
3. Change your mindset and attitude when God points out something that needs to change.
