The Path of Self-Denial

Luke 9:23
“Then He said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.”

Hi, Rehobot Youth! Many people want to become better people. We learn to be polite, responsible, respectful of others, and to do what’s right. All of that is good. However, being a follower of Christ takes us further than simply being a moral person. Jesus calls us to surrender our entire lives to Him and to make His will our top priority.

Jesus said that anyone who wants to follow Him must deny themselves and take up their cross every day. Denying oneself does not mean hating oneself or thinking one is worthless. Denying oneself means no longer making our desires, egos, and personal interests the center of our lives. We learn to say “no” to ourselves when our desires conflict with God’s will, and then choose to obey Him.

Rehobot Youth, taking up the cross means being willing to continue following Christ even when there is a price to pay. Perhaps we must dare to be different from our friends, let go of habits that displease God, forgive when our hearts want to retaliate, or choose honesty when lying seems more advantageous. Christ’s path is not always the most comfortable one, but it is the path that shapes us to become more like Him.

Therefore, Rehobot Youth, following Jesus is not just about knowing what is right, but surrendering our will to Him every day. Self-denial is not a one-time decision, but a choice we continually make in our daily lives. Being a disciple of Christ means no longer asking only, “What do I want?” but learning to ask, “Lord, what do You want?” That is where Christ’s character becomes more and more evident in our lives.

What To Do?
1. Recognize the ego, desires, and habits that hinder your obedience to God.
2. Remain honest, forgiving, and loving, and do what is right.
3. Surrender your plans and desires to God every day.
