When the Lord Jesus taught the prayer “Our Father in heaven,” He was not merely giving words to be memorized. In that address is an important confession: there is a true Father—God in heaven, and there is a false father who seeks to take His place in human life. In John 8:41, the Pharisees said to Jesus, “We have one Father—even God.” But the Lord Jesus exposed their hearts by saying, “You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires” (John 8:44). This statement shows that a person can claim God as Father while living under a will opposed to God’s.
From the beginning, the devil has tried to seize what belongs to God. Because of his pride, he fell from his position, yet he did not cease rebelling. He continually seeks to draw people away from the Lord through lies, sin, and rebellion. That is why Jesus taught us to call God “Our Father in heaven.” Each time we say it, we declare that our life belongs to God, not to sin or the world.
Yet being God’s child is not merely a status spoken with the mouth. Being God’s child means living according to God’s will. A child normally reflects his Father’s character. Therefore, if God truly is our Father, our lives must reflect love, holiness, truth, faithfulness, and humility. Conversely, hatred, lies, selfishness, and rebellion reveal the influence of “another father.”
Here lies the real spiritual battle. The devil does not always come with frightening methods. Often, he offers an easy, comfortable, flesh-pleasing path. He makes sin look normal and hides its consequences. Therefore, Jesus said the way to life is narrow, while the road to destruction is broad. God’s way requires self-denial, repentance, and faithfulness, but it leads to eternal life. Spiritual appearances must not deceive us. A person can be active in worship yet not truly live under God’s rule. Jesus is the Good Shepherd who leads to life, but many other voices seek to mislead: the voice of the world, of sin, of popularity, of comfort, and even false teaching. Without spiritual sensitivity, believers can be carried away unknowingly.
That is why we need God’s Word every day. God’s Word trains our spiritual senses to discern the true from the false. Without the Word and an intimate relationship with the Lord, people are easily deceived and follow foreign voices. Therefore, let us ask honestly: who is really leading our lives? Is God truly our Father, or do we still follow the world and the desires of the flesh? The Lord still calls us back to Him. The Father in heaven is a loving Father who longs for His children to live in truth and enjoy eternal life with Him.
Each time we pray, “Our Father in heaven,” let it be more than words. Let it be a living confession that we truly walk under the leadership of the true Father and follow the Good Shepherd.
