A Friend Who Fosters Growth
“And Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself.”
— 1 Samuel 18:3
Rehobot Youth, every August we commemorate Indonesia’s Independence Day. Independence reminds us of our nation’s liberation from the colonial rule that once stifled its growth and future. Yet, did you know that in our daily lives, we also need to experience “freedom” within our relationships? Not all friendships have a positive impact. While some friendships build us up, others can be oppressive—influencing us to do the wrong things, distancing us from God, or causing us to lose our true identity. This is what is often called a “toxic friendship.”
David had a friend named Jonathan. Their friendship was about more than just having fun together. Jonathan chose to support David, protect him in times of danger, and remain loyal even at the cost of his own interests. Their friendship was built on love, loyalty, and a shared desire to do God’s will.
Through this story, we learn that worshiping God is also reflected in how we treat our friends. Being a friend who listens, honors trust, offers strength when a friend is down, and lovingly points out when they are taking a wrong turn—these are tangible expressions of our love for God.
In this day and age, having many friends or social media followers is not difficult. However, not all relationships foster growth. Therefore, we must be wise in building friendships. Ask yourself: Does my presence draw others closer to God? And do the friendships I have help me grow in faith?
Rehobot Youth, worship is not just about what we do during Sunday service. The way we show up in the lives of others can also be a form of worship that pleases God. Be a friend who brings peace, encouragement, and growth to those around you.
What to Do?
• Be grateful for the friends who help you grow in faith.
• Be a trustworthy friend who exerts a positive influence.
• Evaluate your circle: do the relationships you are building draw you closer to God?
