When the Lord Jesus taught the prayer “Our Father in heaven,” He was introducing God as the Father who is sovereign over all creation. He is the King who has a throne, a realm of rule, and eternal power. The phrase “in heaven” indicates that God’s rule is perfect, holy, and unshakable. No chaos or rebellion can thwart His plans. Everything is under His sovereignty.
Unlike God, the devil is a person who has lost his place because of his rebellion. He has no legitimate eternal kingdom. Therefore, he continually seeks to drag people away from God. Ironically, many are willing to sacrifice truth to preserve comfort, status, wealth, or office in this world. They are busy building temporary lives while forgetting their eternal home.
Yet this world is not our true home. All that is in it will pass away, but God’s Kingdom endures forever. Thus, when we say “Our Father in heaven,” we acknowledge that our lives are under His rule. We confess that only He is worthy to be King and that no power is greater than His. This awareness brings believers peace because our Father holds control over all things.
However, that confession must not remain mere doctrine. As children of the Kingdom of Heaven, we are called to bring heavenly values to earth. In the midst of hatred, we bring love. Amid lies, we live in truth. Amid selfishness, we learn to serve. Bringing heaven means manifesting God’s will through our lives so others can see the reflection of the Father’s character in us.
That is why the Lord Jesus called us the light of the world. The life of a believer must be a tangible testimony. When we work honestly, forgive offenders, remain faithful in suffering, and serve without seeking praise, we are manifesting God’s reign on earth. Jesus Himself is the perfect example. His whole life was filled with obedience to the Father’s will. Throughout His life, the works of the devil were defeated, and God’s Kingdom was revealed. Today, the Lord still wants to reveal His kingdom through believers who live in the same obedience.
As citizens of the Kingdom of Heaven, we also have a hope different from the world’s. We believe life does not end at death. The present earth will pass away, but God has prepared new heavens and a new earth for His people. Therefore, we do not live only for temporary things but for eternal purposes.
Eternal hope does not make us neglect the present life. On the contrary, it drives us to live more earnestly, work diligently, serve faithfully, and glorify God in every part of life. The first Adam failed to establish God’s rule on earth because he fell into sin, but the Lord Jesus, the Second Adam, came to restore that purpose. Now we are called to continue that task.
The prayer “Our Father in heaven” is not merely a memorized prayer. It is a declaration of identity and life’s calling. Each time we say it, we acknowledge that we belong to the Kingdom of Heaven and are called to reflect the Father’s rule. May the world see Christ’s love, peace, holiness, and light through our lives, for we are children of the sovereign Father who possesses an eternal kingdom.
