Today’s devotional is titled:
More Than Just Talent
But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” — 1 Samuel 16:7
In today’s world, talent is often highly valued. Talented people usually attract more attention, receive praise, and are even idolized. Some excel at playing music, public speaking, content creation, leadership, or possess exceptional academic abilities. However, God’s Word today reminds us that there is something more important than all of that: the heart.
Great talent does not always mean that a person’s life is right before God. Someone may appear great on the outside, but secretly be far from God. They may serve in front of many people, but lack a life of prayer. They may appear spiritual, but harbor pride, envy, or wrong motives. God sees deeper than what is visible to human eyes.
God does not reject talent. In fact, talent is a gift from Him. However, God does not want us to focus solely on developing our abilities without paying attention to our character and the holiness of our lives. For in the end, God is not only looking for people who are “capable,” but people whose hearts are willing to be shaped and who live righteously before Him.
Rehobot Youth, don’t just strive to be a talented person. Also be someone who guards their heart before God. Because a righteous life will ensure our talents are used for the right purposes as well. Talents can impress people, but a holy heart makes our lives pleasing to God.
What to Do?
• Evaluate: Are you more focused on developing your skills than on your relationship with God?
• Ask God to shape your character and the motives of your heart every day.
• Use your talents not to seek human praise, but to glorify God.
