True Honor

Exodus 20:12
“Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.”

Sometimes it’s easy to say “I love you” or “I respect you,” but when asked to help, obey, or follow our parents’ decisions, it feels really hard. Yet, respect isn’t just about sweet words—it must be shown through real actions. God gives a clear command: honor your father and mother. This isn’t just a formality, but the foundation of a healthy relationship that makes our lives long and full of blessings.

When Samuel was still a child, he learned to obey the priest Eli, even before he understood all the great things about God. His respectful attitude led God to use him in extraordinary ways. From Samuel, we learn: respecting authority doesn’t mean we lose our freedom; rather, it opens the door for God to work even more powerfully in our lives.

In today’s world, it’s all too easy to challenge parents or leaders with the excuse, “I have my own opinion.” That’s perfectly fine, but if our attitude is rude or rebellious, we’re actually closing the door to blessings. Respect doesn’t mean agreeing 100% with everything, but the way we express our opinions must remain polite, loving, and show respect.

So, if you want a healthy relationship, start with simple things: listen first before responding, help without being asked, and show respect through small actions. Remember, words can be sweet, but consistent actions make others truly feel valued.

What to Do?
• Take time to help your parents without being asked (for example, tidy up the house or help with shopping).
• When facing major decisions, learn to discuss them with a respectful attitude, not by getting defensive or stubborn.
• Show love through small daily actions—because respect is real when it’s visible.
