When Ego Enters the Room

“Pride only causes quarrels, but wisdom is found in those who accept advice.”
— Proverbs 13:10

Many conflicts do not start with big issues, but with egos that refuse to yield. When ego enters a relationship—whether friendship, family, ministry, or community—small things can quickly turn into big arguments.

Proverbs honestly states that pride only produces one thing: strife. When we feel we are most right, most hurt, or most deserving of understanding, we stop listening to others. At that point, conflict is no longer about finding a solution, but about winning the ego.

However, God’s word also provides a clear way out: wisdom is found in those who are willing to accept advice. A wise person is not necessarily always right, but is willing to open their heart, listen, and humble themselves. Humility is often far more powerful than the sharpest argument.

Conflict can actually be a mirror for self-discovery. Through conflict, we learn to ask ourselves: am I defending the truth, or just my ego? Not every argument has to be won, but every conflict can always be a lesson for growing in wisdom and love.

What To Do?
1. When conflict arises, pause and ask: is this about truth or ego?
2. Learn to listen before responding.
3. Ask God for a humble and wise heart.
