When God Meets You in Your Weariness
“Then he went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and sat down under a broom tree. And he requested for himself that he might die, and said, ‘It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life, for I am no better than my fathers.’”
— 1 Kings 19:4
Elijah was a great prophet. He had just experienced an extraordinary spiritual victory on Mount Carmel. But shortly after that, we see a side of Elijah that is rarely talked about: he was tired, afraid, discouraged, and wanted to give up. Elijah was not lacking in faith—he was exhausted.
This story teaches us that even God’s most extraordinary servants can experience emotional and spiritual exhaustion. Elijah did not pretend to be strong before God. He was honest about how he felt. And interestingly, God did not rebuke him for being tired. Instead, God approached him with compassion.
Instead of giving him a long sermon, God gave Elijah rest, food, and His presence. God knew Elijah didn’t need rebuke—he needed restoration. From this we learn that healthy faith is not faith that rejects exhaustion, but faith that brings that exhaustion to God.
Often we feel we must always be strong, active, and productive—especially as believers. We fear that if we pause for a moment, it means we have failed. But through Elijah’s story, God shows us that it’s okay to be tired. It’s okay to stop. It’s okay to recharge.
Exhaustion is not the end of the journey of faith. It is precisely at that point that God often meets us gently. When we stop relying on ourselves and make room for God to work, restoration begins.
Let’s learn from Elijah: we can remain faithful, remain believing, and continue to love God—even when we are very tired. God is still present, supporting and restoring us.
What To Do?
1. Acknowledge your exhaustion before God without guilt.
2. Allow yourself to rest and receive restoration from God.
3. Believe that God cares about the state of your soul, not just the results of your service.
