Today’s devotional is titled:
Being Present Matters
“Then Jesus wept.”
— John 11:35
This verse is very short, but its meaning is profound. Jesus wept not because He did not know what was going to happen—He knew Lazarus would be raised. However, He still chose to be present and feel the grief of Mary and Martha. Jesus did not rush to show His power; He first showed His empathy.
Often, when we see others hurting, we are tempted to immediately offer solutions, advice, or even a “little sermon.” However, not all wounds need answers. Sometimes, all that is needed is someone who is willing to sit with us, listen without judgment, and not leave when the atmosphere feels heavy.
Jesus showed that true empathy is not about talking a lot, but about a heart that is willing to connect. He did not distance Himself from human sorrow, but entered into it. Being present matters—sincere presence is often the most tangible form of love.
When we choose to be present for others, we are reflecting the heart of Jesus: present not to control, not to lecture, but to accompany and strengthen.
What to Do?
1. When someone is hurting, resist the urge to immediately offer solutions—learn to be present and listen.
2. Take time today to accompany someone, even if it’s just with your presence and simple attention.
3. Pray that God will help you become a sensitive person who is willing to be present for others.
