Friends Who Dare to Correct
Proverbs 27:6
“Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses.”
Friendship isn’t just about laughing together or supporting each other in good times. A true friend also dares to say, “Hey, you’re wrong,” in a loving way. Sometimes it’s uncomfortable to hear, but correction is exactly what helps us grow and keeps us from falling into the same mistakes.
If we look at Christian figures in Indonesia, such as Rev. Ingwer Ludwig Nommensen, a missionary known in the Batak region, he didn’t just build churches he built communities. He often corrected and reminded his congregation not to fall back into harmful old habits. Those corrections helped many people learn to live more disciplined lives and grow in their faith.
In our era today, a friend who dares to correct is like a “brake” that keeps us from going out of control. Imagine having friends who always say “it’s fine” even when we’re wrong eventually we’d fall into bad habits without realizing it. But if there’s a friend who dares to say, “Stop, that’s not good,” it’s actually a sign they care about our future.
God wants us to learn to value correction. Don’t get offended or walk away, but see the good intention behind the rebuke. And on the flip side, we are also called to be friends who dare to correct in a way that builds up, not tears down. That way, our circle becomes a healthy place to grow together.
What to Do?
1. Learn to accept correction with an open heart, without being defensive.
2. Evaluate your circle of friends: do they dare to correct you when you’re wrong?
3. Train yourself to be a friend who corrects with love, not one who tears down.
