Learning to Be Still When the World Gets Too Loud

“The Lord said, ‘Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.’ Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.”
— 1 Kings 19:11–12

We live in a noisy world—not just because of traffic, music, or phone notifications, but because of the noise inside our own minds. There are too many inner voices: anxiety, ambition, fear, comparison, and restlessness.

The prophet Elijah once felt that way too. After defeating the prophets of Baal, he felt crushed, exhausted, and afraid. He ran into the wilderness, hid in a cave, and thought his life had lost its meaning. Then God told him to go out and stand on the mountain. A mighty wind came, then an earthquake, then a fire—but God was not in any of those. Finally, there came a gentle whisper, and there Elijah encountered the presence of God.

Sometimes, God doesn’t show Himself in the noise of success, the crowd, or the chaos of social media. He reveals Himself in the stillness—when we dare to stop, put down our screens, and open our hearts. In that silence, God speaks—not with thunder, but with a whisper that pierces the soul.

For a generation living in the flood of notifications, maybe it’s time to press the pause button. Because beyond the silence, there’s a gentle voice that says, “I am here.”

What To Do:
1. Turn off notifications for a moment. Every day, take 10-15 minutes without your cell phone. Use that time just to pray, read the Word, or simply be silent.
2. Create a “quiet space” every day. It can be in your room, a park, or another quiet place. This space becomes a point of stillness to “empty your heart” from the noise of your thoughts.
