Today’s devotion is titled:
Focus on the Giver, Not the Gift
“Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.’”
— Hebrews 13:5
This verse challenges us to see money and possessions from the right perspective: are we serving money or serving God? We become “slaves to money” when our self-worth is defined by what we own. If we feel anxious, angry, or sad when our wallet is empty—or proud when we can spend a lot—it shows that money has taken God’s place in our hearts.
Think about the story of the Financial Fence. Imagine surrounding your house (your life) with a fence made of money. You feel secure as long as the fence is tall (when you have plenty of money). But when the fence collapses—when you lose a job, prices rise, or savings run out—you panic and feel exposed. That’s what it’s like to live depending only on the gift. But God’s promise changes everything: “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” The true fence is not money, but God’s faithfulness—the Giver Himself.
The key to feeling “enough” is not by increasing what we have, but by trusting God’s promise. When we truly believe that the Lord—the source of every blessing—is always with us, our hearts are freed from greed and fear.
Focus on the Giver, not the gift. When God becomes the center of our lives, money no longer controls us; instead, it becomes a tool to glorify Him and bless others.
What To Do:
1. Change your source of security. Realize that God’s presence (the Giver) is far more valuable than any possession (the gift).
2. Train your soul with spiritual discipline. Learn to resist the desires of the flesh.
3. Define your own “enough.” Be conscious not to let the world or social media dictate your standard of contentment.
