Service Isn’t Just an Extra, It’s a Calling

Today’s Devotional is titled:
Service Isn’t Just an Extra, It’s a Calling

“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.” – Romans 12:1

Have you ever felt that service is “optional,” something added outside of your busy schedule of school or work? But in God’s Word, service is not an addition; it is an entity. God wants our entire lives to be worship. Including in the classroom, at the office desk, even in meetings you find boring. Service is not just in church, but wherever we place our feet and hearts.

William Wilberforce is a real-life example of someone who served God in a place that wasn’t “spiritual”—the British Parliament. He was a young politician, living amid ambition and power. But God’s call ignited a resolve in his heart: to abolish the slave trade. It took decades of struggle, debate, criticism, and even despair. But he believed that his service was not an addition to his career; it was the core of his life’s calling.

Today’s Gen-Zers are on campus or in the office, and you have a calling too. It may not be changing the law, but it could be changing the culture of cheating in class, spreading empathy in the workplace, or being a voice for justice on social media. Don’t think that service only happens when you hold a microphone or join a worship team. Service begins with the courage to make your life a “true worship.”

What to Do:
1. Reflect on a part of your daily routine—could it be a form of service to God? Write down one habit or interaction you want to transform into worship.
2. Take one small step to demonstrate Christ’s values where you are, whether through honesty, integrity, or a servant’s attitude, even if it’s not visible.
